Thought for London July 2008
Road to London
The 2008 Beijing Olympic and
Paralympic Games will provide us with a tremendous opportunity to attract even greater numbers of
Chinese companies to our great city.
To enable us to achieve our aims of attracting Chinese businesses to London, we will be co-hosting four high-profile events throughout August, and they will take place at the ‘London House’ in Beijing, which is a joint partnership between the Mayor of London, Think London, the London Development Agency and other agencies. The list of attendees includes some of the key movers and shakers from the Chinese business world, as well as keynote speeches being given by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the Minister for the Olympics, Tessa Jowell.
I am looking forward to working closely with the Mayor’s office and our partners, such as Bank of China, Deloitte and CCPIT as we undertake our activity during and after the Games in Beijing to showcase the advantages of setting up business in London.
The Beijing Olympics will provide us with an opportunity to attract Chinese companies
to London, integrating Gordon Brown’s FDI objectives to attract 100 new Chinese businesses to the
UK, with the Chinese government’s ‘Go Global’ initiative. The London economy is predicted to grow
by $80 billion by 2012; with 10% of this ($8 billion) from opportunities created by the 2012 Games;
representing a huge opportunity for Chinese businesses.
Our events will culminate with the start of a three month ‘Road to London’ campaign, where we will visit 11 cities across China, meeting with companies who are interested in setting up business in London. The route will start in Beijing and will subsequently visit Shanghai in September, ending in Hong Kong in November.
